Smart Technology Brings Real-Time Activity Monitoring to Walkers & Rollators

Port Washington, NY — Drive Medical, a leading global manufacturer of mobility and homecare products, today announced the launch of WalkWise® by Drive®, a smart mobility aid attachment designed to support independence and provide added peace of mind for individuals using walkers and rollators, as well as for their families and caregivers.

WalkWise is a discreet, easy-to-use device that attaches to a walker or rollator and monitors everyday activity patterns. Through a secure mobile app and subscription service, WalkWise delivers real-time notifications and activity insights to caregivers via mobile device, text message, or email, helping families stay aware of important changes in activity.

A Product Inspired by Real Life

WalkWise inventor Peter Chamberlain was inspired by a family experience while a graduate student in mechanical engineering at MIT. His grandmother, Kathleen, lived independently on the family farm and used both a walker and a medical alert button. When she suffered a catastrophic fall, neither device was within reach, and she survived only because a neighbor happened to see her through a window.

“That moment changed everything for me,” said Chamberlain. Drawing on broader research showing that consistent use of mobility aids is linked to reduced fall-related risk, he was inspired to find a way to increase visibility into mobility aid usage and everyday activity. “I realized that mobility aids only help when they’re actually being used—and families need better visibility into what’s happening day to day.”

Chamberlain also recognized a major gap in the market: many solutions were either wearable-based—something seniors often forgot or refused to use—or relied on complex smart-home systems that felt intrusive, cumbersome, or couldn’t be implemented in senior living.

He developed WalkWise to be discreet and hassle-free. Just half an inch thick, the mobility aid connects to the front wheel of a walker or rollator, runs for over a year on two AAA batteries, and doesn’t require the mobility aid user to make any changes to their daily routine. With a simple app, families can see inactivity, device tip-over, and nighttime activity. By tracking when activity goals are met, WalkWise also helps promote activity in seniors, helping them maintain a healthier lifestyle.

Keeping Families Connected

Already trusted in senior living communities, skilled nursing facilities, and home health settings across the United States, the release of WalkWise by Drive brings this technology directly to families for the first time.

“Caregivers today often have to piece together what’s really happening with their loved ones when they can’t be there in person,” said Liz Natale, Senior Director of Product Management at Drive Medical. “WalkWise helps close that gap by giving them the information they need to feel confident in their loved one’s safety.”
